Nakahara Mai in 3-D

Nakahara Mai guest starred as herself in some drama (on TV Tokyo, so you know that shit is quality!) yesterday.

Some observations…

  • This show is really, really bad. Watching real people embarrass themselves isn’t as fun as poking jabs at anime characters.
  • They probably used Mai because she’s tall(er) and has a wide range of voices.
  • By wide range I mean superbitch and high functioning retard, which conveniently covers every anime character ever created. But bear in mind that she does those two voices very well. Someone who’s 4′11″ with a sqeaky voice wouldn’t have the same effect.
  • I’ve seen this with other dramas as well – The main characters are usually the worst actors in the show. They pick good looking people (literacy optional) and make them recite lines without any regard for thespian sensibilities. The best part is when the “good looking people” aren’t all that good looking.
  • Drama storylines and dialogue are just as insipid and nauseating as what you see in anime but it’s socially acceptable to watch real people going through essentially the same motions. It makes sense and I don’t disagree with it, but the argument that J-Dramas are on some transcendent level of maturity compared to anime has lost all credibility with me.
  • Good lord, what the fuck is Mai wearing? I sincerely hope that her agency dresses her that way to draw attention away from her less desirable traits.
  • All Mai really did was give a small lecture, give some poor girl the business for being stupid and one other thing (discussed below)… She didn’t get a chance to really shine, which was a damn shame. I love her superbitch voice.
  • Watching Mai run around the room as an Akiba-kei idol was WAIT WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?

And finally…

  • I look at this face and I wonder – “How in the world is this woman younger than I am?”
